Double-Barrelled Surname After Marriage: Do You Need a Deed Poll?

Reviewed by Mark Keenan, Founder and CEO, Online Legal Services Limited · Last updated 27 October 2026

Combining your surname with your spouse’s is increasingly popular, and in most cases you do not need a deed poll to do it. This guide explains when your marriage certificate is enough, when a deed poll helps, and how to avoid problems with banks and other organisations.

Can I double-barrel my surname with my marriage certificate?

Usually, yes. HM Passport Office accepts a marriage or civil partnership certificate as evidence for a double-barrelled surname made from both spouses’ surnames, for example Evans-Jones or Evans Jones. Either spouse, or both, can do this. See GOV.UK’s guidance on changing your passport after marriage.

Why some people still need a deed poll

Not every organisation follows the Passport Office’s approach. Some banks and other financial institutions ask for a deed poll before they will change your records to a double-barrelled name. You are also likely to need a deed poll if:

  • your new surname is not simply your two surnames combined, for example a blended or newly created name
  • you are changing your first or middle names at the same time
  • you want your children to take the double-barrelled name. Your marriage certificate does not change their names. See our guide to changing a child’s name by deed poll.

Hyphen or no hyphen?

It is your choice. Evans-Jones and Evans Jones are both acceptable. Whichever you choose, use exactly the same form on every document, or you may run into problems when your passport, bank cards and driving licence do not match.

Which order should the names go in?

There is no legal rule. Many couples choose the order that sounds best or that suits any children’s names. Again, the key is consistency.

Civil partnerships

The same rules apply to civil partners. Read more about name change rights in a civil partnership.

Getting a deed poll

If your bank or another organisation asks for a deed poll, or your new name is not covered by your marriage certificate, you can order an adult deed poll online for £15.99. We check it before it is sent, and post it by free 1st Class post on the next working day.
